Kinja'd!!!

Today I heard it from Tavarish, and before, when I listened to him, Adam Carolla would say the same thing. Whenever someone says this it drives me absolutely buggy. It has the same effect on me as when someone says ‘ irregardless’ .

It’s pre-ignition or it’s detonation. It is not pre-detonation. There is no such thing as pre-detonation. And pre-ignition and detonation are not the same thing. Don’t say pre-detonation or I will have to smack you. You have been warned...

“ There is no such thing as pre-detonation.”

This is a hand grenade pre detonation. Checkmate atheists.

Just think of it as an abbreviation of "premature detonation" and maybe it won't bother you so much?

but pre ignition and pre detonation are the same thing?

pre detonation just means you havent tried to start it yet

so does pre ignition

Okay. Irregardless detonation it is.

Exactly. It’s harmless in the  pre-detonated state. If it detonates, you’ve got problems. If it ignites prematurely, you’ve also got problems.

Premature detonation isn’t a thing with ICE engines, because they aren’t ever supposed to detonate. Detonation is not the same as ignition.

Seems to be a regional thing - either it’s irregardless and people don’t understand what regardless means, or it’s regardless and people will $%#$ing cut you and murder your entire family if you say irregardless.

Kinja'd!!!1

I suspect it’s due to the similarity in sound and meaning of irrespective and regardless, with someone unintentionally combining the two into a new non- word that essentially contains a double negative (ir- and -less) . It seems to be an American thing, at least originally, and has unfortunately spread.

Yeah I was actually surprised when I found out that it’s actually quite old - the first use of irregardless in print was in the late 1700s.

I have an infinite supply of pet peeves, but the one that strikes me most often lately is frequent, pointless use of “actually”.

It seems like a filler word for a lot of people when giving presentations/vlogging/ teaching/otherwise monologing .

I have been guilty of both words on occasion, but really, you want to keep use of  that to close company.

“Crick” is up there as well.

How about the use of ‘a myriad of ’... What exactly is a myriad? I learned the correct usage of that one this way - if you substitute the word ‘many’ for ‘myriad’ does the sentence still make sense? ‘ A myriad of geese on the lawn’ turns into ‘A many of geese on the lawn’ - that doesn’t make any sense. ‘Myriad geese on the lawn’ turns into ‘Many geese on the lawn’ - that one works.

It makes my eye twitch.

It has the same effect on me as when someone says ‘irregardless’.

What really bugs me, is that if it actually was a real word, it would literally mean “not without regard”-- w hich is a double-negative mess with no point.
